Valérian Mazataud est un photographe documentaire né en France en 1978, et basé à Montréal, Canada.
Il fait parti de l’équipe de photographes du quotidien Le Devoir depuis 2018. Il a publié des reportages photos dans de nombreux médias canadiens et internationaux (The Globe and Mail, Le Temps, The Walrus, Le Courrier International, Le Monde, der Spiegel…)
Il a à son actif de nombreuses expositions et installations artistiques pour des centres d’artistes, galeries et festivals : la fin de la terre (2014-2020, Rencontres internationales de la photo en Gaspésie, Canada), Grand Nord (2012-2020, Voies Off Arles, France), De nous il ne reste plus personne (2011-2015, Festival Art souterrain, Montréal, Canada).
Photographe autodidacte depuis 2009, il est détenteur d’un diplôme d’ingénieur agronome avec une spécialité en environnement marin. Ses projets et reportages l’ont amené à voyager dans plus de cinquante pays à travers le monde.
Il est récipiendaire de plusieurs prix et bourses en photographie notamment de la part du Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec (CALQ) et du Conseil des arts du Canada (CAC). Il a par ailleurs été invité à participer à plusieurs résidences artistiques, notamment au Aberystwyth Arts Centre du Pays de Galles ou aux centres d’artistes DAÏMÔN, à Gatineau, et VU, à Québec, Canada. Il est finaliste de la bourse Burtynsky 2019 pour son ouvrage liwa mairin.
Depuis 2015 il partage son temps entre le Canada et l’Amérique Centrale (Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua) où il mène plusieurs projets photographiques.
Entre 2002 et 2004 il a réalisé un tour du monde à vélo de plus de 21000 km à travers les cinq continents.

Valerian Mazataud is a Montreal based freelance documentary photographer, born in France in 1978.
He is part of the team of photographers at daily newspaper Le Devoir in Montreal since 2018. He has published photos essays with a a number of canadian and international publications (The Globe and Mail, Le Temps, The Walrus, Le Courrier International, Le Monde, der Spiegel…)
He has shown his work during numerous exhibitions and art installations in artist-run centres, galeries and festivals : The ends of the earth (2014-2020, Rencontres internationales de la photo en Gaspésie, Canada), Great Nordth (2012-2020, Voies Off Arles, France), We are no more (2011-2015, Festival Art souterrain, Montreal, Canada).
A self taught photographer since 2009, he owns a Msc in agronomy with a specialty in marine biology. His projects led him to travel in more than fifty countries around the globe.
He has won various photography awards, including grants from the Canadian council for the arts (CAC) and the Quebec council for the arts (CALQ). He was invited as an artist in residency by the Aberystwyth Arts Centre in Wales as well as at artist-run centres DAÏMÔN, in Gatineau, and Centre VU, in Quebec, Canada. His book liwa mairin was shortlisted for the 2019 Burtynsky Grant.
Since 2015 he shares his time between Canada and Central-America (Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua) where he works on various documentary projects.
He also cycled 21000 km around the world and along the five continents between 2002 and 2004.
